Profile

For more than 70 years, the Liebherr name has stood for excellent, benefit-oriented products and services. The Liebherr Group is not only one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction machinery; it is also a major supplier in many other fields of engineering like the wind industry.

The Liebherr Group is a powerful partner for the wind industry and offers convincing solutions for a wide range of requirements: On the one hand, components manufactured by Liebherr are installed directly into wind turbines. On the other hand, the company’s mobile, crawler and offshore cranes are used for erecting wind turbines and constructing wind farms.

Offering slewing bearings and slew drives, Liebherr is the only manufacturer worldwide that provides the entire system for electromechanical rotor blade and yaw adjustment in wind turbines. To enable the adjustment movements of the wind turbine's pitch and yaw system, Liebherr designs drives for all megawatt classes of on-shore and off-shore wind turbines. These include products from the broad portfolio, as well as customised solutions. Liebherr has also developed and tested a special grease for blade and yaw bearings. The product range also includes single and double-row tapered roller bearings or triple-row roller bearings for main bearings. The clearance-free design makes them suitable for maximum precision and accuracy. Seamless induction hardened and super-finished raceways of the main bearings ensure longer running times, and therefore more efficient electricity production. The in-house, state-of-the-art test bench makes it possible to qualify main bearings with external diameters of up to six metres.

Liebherr collaborates with nearly all leading turbine manufacturers and has equipped numerous wind turbines so far. The offering comprises components for turbines from 800 kW up to solutions for multi-megawatt offshore turbines.

A comprehensive range of services includes short-term replacement of components, reconditioning of damaged or older products, and development of components that actively address damage patterns in the field to extend the lifetime of the wind turbine.

With their innovative technology, high quality, profitability and longevity, mobile and crawler cranes from Liebherr own a leading position in the world market. For decades, they have also been proving their value in the construction of wind farms. As well as telescopic mobile cranes, Liebherr also provides lattice boom mobile cranes and crawler cranes to erect wind power systems, in a variety of performance classes, specifically matched to meet the needs of the wind power industry. The Liebherr Group keeps pace with the development of larger and more efficient turbines as well as the increasing hub heights by offering cranes with optimized performance and new jib systems, reaching higher lifting capacities.

Cranes on narrow crawler travel gears especially developed for the construction of wind farms can move on the narrow tracks from one unit to the next in full setup condition, that is including jib and full ballast. This is especially economical, because machine and equipment have to be mounted only once.

Liebherr offers also solutions for loading and erecting wind turbines at offshore locations. Mobile harbour cranes handle rotor blades, generators, nacelles and monopiles for onshore and offshore wind turbines. The Sycratronic tandem lift assistance system is frequently used, with two LHM 800 mobile harbour cranes lifting up to 616 tonnes. Offshore cranes have a lifting capacity of up to 5,000 tonnes and reach a lifting height of up to 180 m above deck. Liebherr cranes fulfil all requirements: diesel or electrically powered, explosion-proof and suitable for temperatures between +40 °C and -50 °C. They are used successfully in the erection of offshore wind turbines, the construction or conversion of oil and gas platforms, pipe-laying and deep-sea work up to 3,600 metres below sea level.
